Being a Counselor in Training (CIT) is a very rewarding job. Though it consists of physical and emotional stamina while dealing with children and peers, it will be a useful experience for your future and an opportunity to partake in teamwork, build skills, and strengthen your communication. This experience will allow you to be evaluated on a continuous basis on the tasks you are assigned and to experiment with different leadership styles. The CIT will work closely with their fellow counselors, and under the supervision of Teachers and the Camp Supervisor. During the camp, CIT will serve on the counseling team, handling one to three children depending on the age group. Adequate training will be provided prior to the start of camp.
Provide guidance and advice and serve as a role model to the campers.
Welcome campers to MYCC Summer Camp and make them comfortable.
Supervise all aspects of campers’ day from the time they are dropped off until the time they are picked up.
Monitor safety and appropriateness of campers’ activity.
Provide opportunities to discuss concerns or problems of campers.
Work to establish a positive Islamic environment.
Encourage respect for individuals, personal property, camp facilities, and nature.
Remind and help campers realize their goals as established by MYCC Summer Camp.
Participate in additional skill building tasks which will strengthen your competencies.
Staff must arrive 30 minutes prior to camp and leave 30 minutes after camp.
Strength and endurance to maintain constant supervision of campers.
Ability to observe camper behavior, assess the situation, and assess appropriate safety policies and emergency procedures.
Cognitive and communication abilities needed to effectively plan and conduct program activities.
Must be enthusiastic, vocal, and energized and keep campers engaged at all times.
Must be able to work well in an ambiguous and changing environment.
Must be goal oriented and self-managing.
Must be a team player and have the ability to align their work to the overall MYCC strategy.
Note: Counselors-in-Training will receive a Certificate of Volunteer Hours and great leadership experience!
